Happiness is a Choice…Not a Destination
Have you ever been so blinded by life’s conditions and experiences that your thoughts and emotions are controlled by everything that is happening around you? I’ve been there…plenty of times. However, at some point, I had somewhat of an epiphany. It came from a message that had been waved in right in front of my face in many ways, frequently, but I was too blinded by negative thoughts to even consider how the message could apply to me.
I was at a place where I had allowed the external to determine my happiness. This is not okay.
Happiness is meant to come from within. It is to be controlled by you…and you alone. Sure, it sounds good to say, “If you’re happy, I’m happy,” but if that statement also takes on the “If you’re mad, I’m mad”; “If you’re sad, I’m sad”; “You good? I’m good.” However, you then have to wonder, “Who/What is really in control here?”
The very moment you begin to allow anything outside of your own spirit to determine your emotions is the very moment you lose control of who you are today and who you can be tomorrow. No one and nothing should contribute to your happiness more than YOU, in the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual sense.
Some ways to trigger your own happiness:
- Exercise and eat healthy to be physically happy (I don’t mention sex here because sex may bring pleasure, but not necessarily happiness).
- Talk out or write down your daily emotions. If you’re blessed with a wise confidante, express yourself to them. This could be a relative, friend, mentor, therapist, spiritual leader...whoever you trust for wise council.
- Find at least 5–10 minutes to still your mind and meditate on all that is GREAT in your life. If you can’t think of anything, talk to someone about this… then sit there longer until you come up with more on your own. Well all have something for which to be grateful! The mere fact that you are alive with a functioning brain is something to be grateful for. Another day to try to figure this ish out…#grateful. That’s two right there.
- And, finally, feed your spirit with the activities that bring you solace. Whether its exercise, reading, writing, creating, singing, dancing, service, praising (Amen!)…WHATEVER IT IS, DO IT REGULARLY. You aren’t your happiest when hungry, right? Neither is your spirit! So feed it!
Happiness comes from within and, as I write this, it is also a reminder to myself. We have to be committed to our happiness. We cannot allow others and objects to determine our emotions. One simple way to start is to keep an expression on your face that you want to live in. Most people know me for my smile…that’s a blessing and I would love to keep it that way. Not for them, but for me, because I am the only one who has to live my life…and I, hereby, choose to do it happily with smile on face. *cheers to that*
